Belize Barrier Reef

Overview

Belize Barrier Reef lies off the coast of Belize, a series of coral reefs set about 300 metres offshore in the north and 40 kilometres offshore in the south, within the country’s limits. It forms a 300-kilometre reach of the 900-kilometre Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, continuous from Cancún on the north-eastern tip of the Yucatán Peninsula through the Riviera Maya to Honduras, the world’s second largest coral reef system after Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. It draws almost half of Belize’s 260,000 visitors for scuba diving and snorkeling, and remains vital to the country’s fishing industry.
