Chesil Cove

Overview

Chesil Cove is a curved, steep bank at the south-east end of Chesil Beach, a 29-kilometre, 18-mile strand of shingle in Dorset, England. It belongs to one of Britain’s three great shingle structures, running from West Bay to the Isle of Portland, where Portland stands as a firm barrier, a groyne against the tide, helping wind and water heap the beach into the cove’s broad curve. The cove, the bill, and much of Chesil Beach shelter Weymouth Bay, Weymouth, and Chiswell from prevailing wind and waves, and lie within the Jurassic Coast.
